I have three major regrets from my college days – and, thank goodness, none of them have to do with drugs or alcohol.

  1. I regret not studying abroad.
  2. I regret only taking one history class.
  3. I regret taking zero business classes.

A semester spent in a different country could have provided valuable global perspective. I could have experienced another culture’s view of the United States, participated in fresh conversations on current issues, absorbed another language. Sure, you can do all those things at home, but they come organically when you spend time in another land.

History is invaluable to a journalist. It provides very necessary context for every story we report. I found, without that foundation, I often came across as inexperienced, even naive. And that lack of initial learning means I have to do more research now.

Business is simply a foreign language to me. I feel like even one economics class would have put me in a better position to understand the moves and shakes we cover – from my community to the federal government. Taking a crash course in Business Strategy 101 while trying to research and write a report on a daily deadline is a poor substitute for an entire semester devoted to understanding those concepts.

So, sign up now for the History of Business… in Spain!
