First Jobs: Students Getting it Right

I really liked Tai’s last entry and wanted to add some great examples of students getting it right when applying for internships (followed by my gut reaction when I read them):
- “I am fluent in Spanish and English, with some knowledge of Korean and Mandarin Chinese.”
That’s just cool, no matter what you’re trying to do!
And here are a few more good examples…
- “I wrote, shot, edited news packages.”
Great – that means I don’t have to start from scratch.
- “If you’d like to see any of the work I’ve done, here’s a link:”
Makes it easy on me. I can watch and decide on the spot how to proceed.
- “I’ve reported for the campus newspaper, radio station and television station.”
I’m guessing this person really likes journalism… or at least is motivated enough to try everything.
- “I would ultimately like to become a producer.”
I don’t get many of these.
- “Upon graduation, I would love to report in a smaller market, then work my way up to a larger city.”
This tells me she understands the reality of the industry.
But this one takes the cake:
- “I am particularly attracted to visual media because it satisfies the viewers’ needs for more in-depth information in less time. It’s a game of putting together sound, gestures, video, and words to make a message that resonates with viewers. It’s my purpose to discover the untold stories; to use all forms of media like never before to atract viewers’ attention; to bring for the information people actually want; and to restore trust in journalism by building relationships in the community. I am excited about the changing role of journalists in society, and can’t wait to be a part of the transformation.”
That’s much more than a response to an application question. That’s a mission statement. She’s hired.
