Now & Next: Hello TV. Meet Web.

In October, Google rolled out its much anticipated Google TV platform to merge web content with television sets – a real game changer when it comes to broadcasting.

Traditionally, television has always been an outlet exclusively set up to to provide viewers with programming from major broadcast networks and cable providers, in a linear fashion. Google TV changes that – it’s designed to give viewers the option to select from television programing along with content and shows available online. With apps included in the platform, Google TV promises user a more interactive experience with television, with streamlined searches and content on demand, whenever you want to watch it.

Furthermore, Google TV effectively opens the door for web broadcasters to be seen on television.

According to Mediaweek, Google CEO Eric Schmidt slammed broadcast networks for their reluctance to allow their content to be accessed by Google TV. The below excerpt is from Tuesday’s article, by Mike Shields:

“Schmidt relayed the comments of one network executive in a slightly mocking voice, “Don’t you realize that you are taking a dumb TV and making it smarter?” Making TV smarter is a prospect Schmidt clearly doesn’t see as a negative.

“The concern is that the enormous revenue stream is going to be somehow affected by Google TV. I disagree,” he said. “People are going to watch more TV.”

Clearly, viewers get more options with Google TV and web broadcasters are no longer relegated to the confines of laptop and computer screens. What do you think? Should networks keep their content separate from Google TV, or should they be more open? Any predictions on how this will play out?
