Now & Next: Rules to Social Media

BiB Contributor | Krista Homiak – August 2011:
Have you noticed in your job searches social medias like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and blogging use are a minimum requirement? Things such as “must carry iPad with you wherever you go” is listed as a priority? Your skill level in getting a job as a media professional can be measured in tweets.
As Erik Qualman’s Socialnomics tells us “ We don’t have a choice on whether we do social media, the question is how well we do it”. What are you doing to elevate your cyber presence and project yourself? The key is to use these tools correctly. An advantage to social networking is that you create your own story in how you brand and market yourself. Is your Glenn Quagmire avatar really the best representation of yourself? Giggity Giggity. By creating credible self value your chances are increased in finding job opportunities. Team up with other people who have the same interests. Even though junior high school is over, being a follower is acceptable. Get the latest news on your favorite companies and participate in blogging to showcase your skills. Make sure you keep your LinkedIn profile up to date and complete. This is a great place to share things you couldn’t otherwise fit on your 15 page resume.
Things to beware of when trying to get noticed by recruiters is posting that once in a life time shot of you masterfully winning beer pong. A better idea to increase your credibility is by posting industry related articles and case studies. If you happen to be the world series beer pong champion…well my apologies, please share.
